Welcome to Minneapolis!

After Mythic Championship IV was saturated with Hogaak decks and dominated by Tron, people wondered what the Modern metagame would look like in Minneapolis. Justin Plocher's new spin on Hogaak, paired with next level strategies, proved to be the recipe for success winning the Hogaak-mirror against Jonathan Corzo in the 2-game finals.

But this weekend wasn't just defined by Hogaak - although it made up twenty percent of the day 2 metagame and more than sixty percent of the top 8, many other decks appeared nearly out of nowhere to great success. At his first GP ever, Nathan Graves piloted a Tron deck featuring Unexpected results to a 110th place finish. Twiddle Storm, which abuses the synergy of Twiddle and Lotus Field, put Nathan Wells in 17th place with a 12-3 record - one win away from top 8. Although much less talked about, Arclight Phoenix cotinues to be a powerful option in modern and made up 10% of day 2 and put three copies in the top 16. Even Hogaak, which was a dominant force at the top tables this weekend, splintered into many different innovative sub-archetpyes featuring Glowspore Shamans, Conflagrates, Golgari Thugs, Hedron Crabs, Lotleth Trolls, and Thought Scours.

Magic is only one half of the picture and the people Gathering to play are what really defined MagicFest Minneapolis. For maybe the first time in history, a married couple, Koelten and Shelby Grissom, both made day 2 and ultimately placed high enough to earn cash at a Grand Prix. Local celebrity Ryan Oveturf earned a spot in the top 8 and an invitation to the next paper Mythic Championship. Zach Dunn, 16, also earned an invite to his first Mythic Championship masterfully piloting his deck to a 5th place finish. Throughout the MagicFest hall, people played side events, traded, participated in 100+ person Commander events, even selling out every Fanatic package available. Magic was alive and well this weekend, even the top deck was full of zombies.

Although this weekend has inspired many talks of emergency bannings across the community, the trophy could not have gone to a better player. Justin Plocher didn't let the stress of the big stage get to him and turned his positive attitude and play skill into a Grand Prix trophy.

Day 1

Despite the dreary weather, 981 players made it out the Minneapolis Convention Center to battle it out in the modern Grand Prix. Which deck will reign supreme - will Hogaak continue to trample over the competition or will some other deck prove triumphant? But more importantly, we look forward to seeing who will carry home the trophy on Sunday evening.

Day 2

Almost 1000 players whittled down to just 171. The competition has never looked tougher - but who will bring home the trophy? Three players came into day 2 undefeated - Greg Orange, Lucien Longlais, and Michael Bearmon - piloting three unique decks, but at this point any of the competitors could come out on top.
