Marlos Batista Ferreira is your Grand Prix São Paulo champion!
On Saturday morning, 1,397 players from all over the world entered the main event to take their shot at a winner's trophy and a piece of the $35,000 prize pool in the Modern format.
Modern’s diversity shone through all weekend, with a varied metagame overall. The Top 8 featured two Izzet Phoenix decks, two Humans decks, along with Burn, TitanShift, Bogles, and Tron. Humans in particular overperformed, as the 9th-place and 10th-place finishers were also on that deck.
Andrés Cifuentes reached the finals with Humans, but in the end, it was Marlos Batista Ferreira who emerged triumphant with Tron. In the final game, he locked it up by casting Karn Liberated, exiling Deputy of Detention, and getting back Ugin, the Spirit Dragon. The duo of colorless planeswalkers took it down.
The Brazilian Magic community also showed how to put the gathering in Magic this weekend. The MagicFest hosted numerous awesome cosplayers, a marriage proposal hidden as an Ultimate Master box topper, and a recreation of the War of the Spark teaser structure, to name but a few of the standouts.
We are looking forward to returning to São Paulo in November. Until then, congratulations again to Marlos Batista Ferreira, champion of Grand Prix São Paulo!
