Esther Trujillo, Ruben Perez, and Joel Calafell are your Grand Prix Ghent champions!

On Saturday morning, 1440 players (480 teams) entered the main event in the Team Modern format, with a $50,300 prize pool.

In the end, it was the Spanish team of Esther Trujillo, Ruben Perez, and Joel Calafell (playing Jund, Whirza, and Whirza respectively) who emerged victorious. All three Grand Prix champions earned an automatic qualification for the first Players Tour Finals in 2020.

The victory was particularly special for Ítaca store owner, six-time Pro Tour competitor, and stalwart of the Spanish Magic scene Esther Trujillo because she became the second female Grand Prix champion in the history of the game. Congratulations!

In the finals, the Spaniards defeated the Dutch trio of Brent Vos, Niels van der Sande, and Jesper Box (playing Jeskai Stoneblade, Whirza, and Dredge respectively). They put up a strong fight, but they were defeated by an infinite number of Thopter tokens.

Modern was diverse overall, but Whirza in particular overperformed. It was the most-played deck in the Top 8, and the fifth-place team of Piotr Glogowski, Louis Deltour, and Julien Henry even ran triple Whirza.

It was also a good weekend for Spain at the PTQs

Besides the Grand Prix, the event schedule featured as many as five Players Tour Qualifiers: two on Friday, one on Saturday, and two on Sunday. This PTQ schedule will be the standard at MagicFests going forward.

Two PTQs were Standard and uniquely, both were won not only by the same 75-card Boros Feather list but by the same physical deck! The cards found success in the hands of Spanish Show&Tell teammates José Luis Velázquez and Sergio Garcia, who both qualified for the first set of Players Tour "Regionals" in 2020

The Modern PTQs were larger, and their Players Tour slots were won by Jari Rentsch, Lev Ducenko, and Jan Stadler. Congratulations!
