Antoine Lagarde is your Grand Prix Lyon champion!

On Saturday morning, 944 players from all over the world have entered the main event to take their shot at a winner's trophy and a share of the $50,300 prize pool in the Standard format.

In the end, it was Antoine Lagarde (playing Bant Food) who was triumphant, defeating Francisco Jose Gonzalez Hidalgo (playing Sultai Food) in an Oko mirror in the finals.

Oko decks dominated

This weekend marked the first Standard Grand Prix since the ban of Field of the Dead. To the surprise of no one, there were a lot of Okos, and many cards were turned into 3/3 Elks over the course of the weekend. UGx Food decks represented 30.6% of the Day 1 metagame, 41.7% of the Day 2 metagame, and 62.5% of the Top 8. In addition, the Top had a sixth Oko deck in Four-color Sacrifice.

Temur Reclamation performed well

A non-Oko breakout deck was Temur Reclamation. Enormous Explosions fueled by Wilderness Reclamation could go over the top of the Food decks in the late game, and the relative disappearance of Teferi, Time Raveler from the competitive metagame meant that the biggest problem card for the strategy was absent. The combined record of Temur Reclamation players was 191-134 (a 58.8% win rate, the highest of all major non-Food archetypes) and two of them ended Day 1 at 9-0. However, no Temur Reclamation players made the Top 8, in part because they ran into Bant Food players and their Teferis in the final rounds.

Mana advantage decided the finals

In the first game of the finals, Lagarde took the first game because Gonzalez Hidalgo stalled on two lands for too long, while Lagarde was scrying into win conditions with Castle Vantress. The second game was won by Gonzalez Hidalgo when he followed up Nissa with a 10/10 Hydroid Krasis. The third game again went to the player who best developed his mana: after ramping like crazy, Lagarde played Nissa and Oko in the same turn, and that was enough of a swing to overpower his opponent.

Bant Food provided brilliant

With his victory, Antoine Lagarde earned a direct invitation to the first Players Tour Finals in 2020 and cemented Bant Food as the best version of the deck. His list contained Mass Manipulation in the main deck to gain inevitability in Food mirrors and Teferi in the sideboard to improve against decks like Temur Reclamation. These card choices proved brilliant, as Thierry Ramboa finished third with nearly the same 75.

This Bant Food version wouldn't have been possible without Pro Tour Valencia 2007 champion Remi Fortier. Fortier recently dedicated a lot of time to organize and step up the French Magic community, including the launch of the so-called PERF Discord server. PERF aims to help any French players prepare for high-level tournaments, and it worked out beautifully in Lyon with the best-performing deck and a French victory.

Congratulations once again Antoine Lagarde for winning the trophy at Grand Prix Lyon 2019!
