Ben Weitz is your Grand Prix Phoenix champion!
Earlier On Saturday morning, 919 players (excluding no-shows) entered the Grand Prix to take their shot at a winner's trophy in the Pioneer format. In the end, it was Allied Strategies podcast co-host Ben Weitz (playing Mono-Red Eldrazi) in his ninth GP Top 8 who was triumphant, taking the biggest piece of the $50,300 prize pool. In the finals, he defeated Andrew Lopez (playing U/B Inverter).
Weitz's deck was an innovative take on Mono-Red. He had been testing it for weeks, but it was merely his second choice for the Players Tour. In that event, he played Lotus Breach "very badly", failed to make Day 2, and decided to switch back to his second deck choice for the Grand Prix. "I sleeved up my trusty Mountains, put 4 Damping Sphere in my sideboard, and ran with it." It worked out perfectly.
Explaining his card choices, he felt that playing less than 4 Mutavault in an aggressive deck was criminal, and the large number of colorless lands made it possible to add some interdimensional monstrosities. Eldrazi Obligator is eager to steal Inverter of Truth or Uro in the current Pioneer metagame, and Thought-Knot Seer is a great sideboard card against combo decks. All in all, it's a sweet list. Congratulations once again to Ben Weitz, your Grand Prix Phoenix champion!
